Taiwan Beverage Alcohol Forum (TBAF) organized an “I Pledge NOT TO Drink & Drive” campaign in August this year, in which 12 beverage alcohol companies and nearly 500 employees showed up and made the pledge. This campaign also gathered more than 16,000 pledges online and garnered large-scale support from the general public. Built on such success, MOTC and TBAF organize an “I Pledge NOT TO Drink & Drive” voluntary corporate compliance campaign, in which 55 companies from 4 major industries join hands, including insurance, telecommunications, broadcasting, beverage alcohol and transportations companies. At the press conference, representatives from these companies sign the pledge and also incorporate “no drink driving” related regulations into their employee handbook. There is a ceremony to light up the flying lanterns to pray for the creation of a nation-wide “no drink driving” campaign to promote a safe traffic environment that ensures everyone can get home safely.

MOTC Minister Ho Chen Dan (賀陳旦) attends the press conference and commends those companies that sign the pledge. He says: “It’s great to see so many companies participate in this campaign so enthusiastically and demonstrate a strong determination to promote ‘zero-tolerance for drink driving’. These enterprises take voluntary actions to regulate their employees and to educate them not to drink and drive. Together we light up the flying lanterns to pray for better and safer road traffic environment and to provide a guiding torch to lead us all towards a ‘no drink-driving nation’.” In order to solicit more participation from the enterprises, MOTC sets up a website for companies to make their pledges online and hopefully more and more companies will join. TBAF has dedicated itself to promoting “no drink driving” for the past 16 years, spending more than NT$ 60 million for related activities. It has targeted beverage alcohol companies, young students, and the general public through continued promotional activities. TBAF assists and supports the government to safeguard road traffic environment. TBAF Chairman Mr. Terrence ONG (王德勤) says: “It is a great honor for us to co-organize the ‘I Pledge NOT TO Drink & Drive voluntary corporate compliance’ press conference. Through the participation of these companies, we hope to make more people aware of the importance of ‘no drink driving’. We are now entering the peak time for potential ‘drink driving’ as we approach the year-end and Chinese New Year festivities. We hope that this pledging campaign can serve as the best example for our society. TBAF has launched many campaign activities for no drink driving for many years. This year, our ‘I Pledge NOT TO Drink and Drive’ campaign website has attracted nearly 80,000 people to sign up and make their pledge. We welcome more people to join us.” (I Pledge NOT TO Drink & Drive website: http://www.tbaf.org.tw/ipledge/ )

“I Pledge NOT TO Drink & Drive” is not just a slogan. It is the best principle for road users. We hope today’s “I Pledge NOT TO Drink &Drive” campaign will become a nation-wide activity.

The Taiwan Beverage Alcohol Forum (TBAF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advocacy of responsible drinking and the prevention of inappropriate drinking behaviors. It was established in October 2000 by several European and American alcohol companies and media groups, with a primary focus on promoting a responsible and healthy drinking culture as its long-term goal. For more information, please check the TBAF website (www.tbaf.org.tw).

“When drinking, no driving, and use designated drivers”— the designated driver could be male or female. The only criterion is that the designated driver should not drink. To put it simply, at a social gathering, before everyone starts drinking, a designated driver must be selected. Entrusted with the responsibility of driving people home, the designated driver should not drink that evening.
